Brembo Acquires Öhlins: A New Era for High-Performance Motorcycle Components

Brembo Acquires Öhlins A New Era for High-Performance Motorcycle Components

For over two decades, one of the most consistent trends in the powersports industry has been consolidation. From manufacturers acquiring other brands, such as KTM’s takeover of Husqvarna, GasGas, and MV Agusta, to mergers among aftermarket suppliers, the industry has seen continuous movement towards larger corporate conglomerates. This trend continues as Brembo, a leading manufacturer of high-performance brake systems, has announced its acquisition of Öhlins, a premium suspension technology brand.

The news comes directly from Öhlins, where they shared that Brembo has made an offer to purchase the company from its current owner, Tenneco. In a statement, Tenneco emphasized that this sale aligns with their strategy to streamline their business and focus on long-term goals.

“Tenneco announced today it has entered into an agreement to sell Öhlins Racing, a leading manufacturer of premium suspension technology, to Brembo, a global leader in the manufacturing of high-performance braking systems and components. This sale marks a key milestone in advancing Tenneco’s strategic priorities,” said Jim Voss, CEO of Tenneco.

Tom Wittenschlaeger, CEO of Öhlins Racing, expressed optimism about the acquisition: “As we join forces with Brembo, we are excited to unlock new growth opportunities and leverage our respective strengths to drive innovation and deliver even greater value to our customers and employees.”

Brembo’s Executive Chairman, Matteo Tiraboschi, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Öhlins is a strong fit for Brembo. It is a world-renowned brand with an unrivaled reputation on both the racetrack and the road. We welcome Öhlins to our group as an exciting opportunity to expand our offerings for the automotive market.”

This acquisition is expected to finalize in early 2025, pending regulatory approvals. While Tenneco will continue to support its customers and employees during this transition, it’s still unclear how this move will affect Öhlins in the long term. Ownership changes often bring shifts in management or strategy, but given both companies’ long-standing reputations for producing high-quality components, significant disruptions seem unlikely.

Ultimately, this merger positions Brembo to further solidify its role as a dominant force in the powersports industry, with Öhlins’ expertise in suspension technology complementing Brembo’s renowned braking systems. Together, they are poised to push the boundaries of innovation for high-performance motorcycle and automotive components.
