European Auto Giants Unveil Budget EVs to Compete with China

Several of Europe's largest automakers introduced low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, aiming to address a demand slump and reclaim market share from Chinese brands. The event, which runs through October 15, has been seen as a critical moment for the European automotive industry, potentially marking a turning point as the competition with China intensifies.

European Auto Giants Unveil Budget EVs to Compete with China

"It feels like Europe is fighting back," said Julia Poliscanova, Senior Director for Vehicles and E-mobility at Transport & Environment. She noted that numerous automakers like Citroen, Peugeot, and Renault showcased smaller, more affordable EV models, a strategy designed to capture the mass market—where Chinese automakers have been particularly successful.

A Strategic Response to China’s Dominance

Europe’s automakers have faced significant challenges in fully transitioning to electric mobility. These include a shortage of affordable models, slow deployment of EV charging infrastructure, and increasing competition from Chinese brands offering low-cost alternatives. With emissions-reduction targets set to take effect in 2025, European manufacturers are feeling the pressure to ramp up EV sales or face hefty fines.

The Paris Motor Show provided a platform for carmakers to showcase an array of budget-friendly models aimed at revitalizing the European EV market. Renault, for example, introduced the Twingo E-Tech electric prototype, expected to hit the market in 2026 for under €20,000 ($21,800). Additionally, Renault's Dacia brand revealed an updated version of its Spring model, one of the most affordable EVs in Europe, priced under €20,000.

Stellantis and Renault Lead the Charge

Stellantis, another automotive giant, debuted its compact Citroen C4 and C4 X models, emphasizing their role in the energy transition with competitive pricing. Both models are designed to offer a balance between affordability and innovation, appealing to consumers who may have been priced out of the premium EV market.

"The narrative that consumer interest in EVs has cooled off is not true," said Poliscanova. "The issue this year in Europe was the lack of affordable options, but as soon as these new budget-friendly models become available, demand will surge."

Competing with Chinese EVs

Chinese-made EVs, known for their affordability, pose a significant challenge to European and U.S. manufacturers. In the first half of 2023, the average retail price for a battery electric vehicle in China was around €31,000, compared to over €66,000 in Europe and €68,000 in the U.S. This price gap has allowed Chinese brands to rapidly gain market share, both domestically and internationally.

Dacia CEO Denis Le Vot, speaking at the Paris Motor Show, highlighted the company's role in providing affordable EVs, including the revamped Spring model. "We’re launching a completely updated version for 2024, with a new engine and enhanced features, all for less than €20,000. There are very few full-electric vehicles in Europe at that price point," he said.

A Transitional Phase for Europe’s Auto Industry

While the challenges facing Europe’s auto industry are undeniable, industry leaders remain optimistic. Pere Brugal, President and Managing Director of GM Europe, described the current period as a transitional phase rather than a crisis. He emphasized that the shift to electric mobility is inevitable, but the path to mass adoption is rarely straightforward.

"The adoption of new technologies and behaviors is never a linear growth story," Brugal explained. "However, the future is clearly electric, and we are already seeing a strong foundation of charging infrastructure in place across Europe."

As European automakers accelerate their efforts to produce affordable EVs, the competition with China will continue to shape the industry’s future. The Paris Motor Show may well be a pivotal moment in Europe’s fight to reclaim its position in the global EV market.
