BYD Enters Vietnam’s EV Market with Han EV and M6 MPV Debut

BYD, the Chinese automotive giant, has officially launched two new electric vehicles in Vietnam: the BYD Han EV and the BYD M6 electric MPV. These latest additions signal BYD's commitment to capturing a growing share of Vietnam's electric vehicle (EV) market, already gaining traction in Southeast Asia.

BYD Han EV: Flagship Sedan with a Tech Boost

The BYD Han EV, priced at 1.489 billion VND (approximately $58,800 USD), is a flagship electric sedan that originally debuted in the Chinese market back in 2020. The 2025 refresh brings several upgrades, including enhanced rear suspension, new body colors, and improved LiDAR sensors for better autonomous driving capabilities. With these updates, the Han EV offers a blend of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology.

In China, the 2025 version of the Han EV launched in September with a starting price of 165,800 yuan (around $23,200 USD), making it a competitive option for EV buyers.

BYD M6 MPV: Affordable Family-Friendly Electric

Priced from 756 million VND (approximately $29,800 USD), the BYD M6 is an electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) designed for family use. Unlike the Han EV, the M6 is not currently available in China and is exclusive to select Southeast Asian markets, including Indonesia and Thailand. The M6 replaces the original combustion-engine model that was first launched in 2010 and had received several facelifts before being discontinued.

While the M6 hasn’t yet reached China, its expansion into Vietnam is expected to attract buyers looking for an affordable, eco-friendly family vehicle.

BYD’s Growth in Vietnam: Challenges and Opportunities

BYD's entry into Vietnam is part of a broader strategy to penetrate emerging EV markets across Southeast Asia. The automaker first entered the Vietnamese market in July 2023, launching the Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3 models, which have become mainstays in BYD’s global expansion.

While there have been rumors about BYD building a manufacturing plant in Vietnam, these plans appear to be on hold for now. For the time being, the vehicles sold in Vietnam are imported from China, though this is expected to change once BYD’s new manufacturing facility in Thailand becomes operational.

Competition Heats Up: Facing Rivals Like VinFast

Vietnam’s growing EV market presents both opportunities and challenges for BYD. Local automaker VinFast, along with other Chinese competitors like Great Wall Motors and SAIC-GM-Wuling, are already vying for dominance in this space. In 2023, a total of 404,294 cars were sold in Vietnam, with electric vehicles making up approximately 6% of that figure. As consumer interest in EVs continues to grow, BYD aims to carve out a significant share of this expanding market.

With the launch of the Han EV and M6 MPV, BYD is positioning itself to cater to a wide range of Vietnamese consumers, from tech-savvy buyers seeking luxury to families looking for affordable and eco-friendly options.
