Toyota Recalls 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrids Due to Power Brake Assist Failure
Toyota has issued a recall for over 42,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs from model years 2023 and 2024, addressing a critical software issue that may result in a loss of power brake assist while cornering. This recall affects vehicles equipped with skid-control units that could potentially lead to longer stopping distances.
Faulty Software in Skid-Control Units
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the affected Corolla Cross Hybrids have faulty software in their skid-control units. These units manage both friction and regenerative braking. The issue occurs when inadequate brake fluid pressure is applied while cornering, causing reduced braking power. Drivers may notice the brake pedal becoming unusually firm, which can contribute to increased stopping distances.
Toyota's Response to the Issue
According to Toyota, 100% of the recalled vehicles are believed to have this software issue. The problematic control unit is part of a brake-actuator assembly provided by Bosch. While the Corolla Cross Hybrids are currently the focus, Toyota has indicated that other models may be equipped with similar actuators and software from Bosch, but further investigations are underway to determine if they are also affected by braking power loss.
Free Software Update for Owners
To resolve the issue, Toyota is offering a free software update for the skid-control units in affected vehicles. Dealers will handle the update at no cost, and Toyota will begin notifying owners via mail starting November 5, 2024.
